Social Movements and Philanthropy in Brazil

This study, published by the Comuá Network, explores the role of Brazilian philanthropy in funding and supporting social movements and the self-financing strategies of these movements

Social movements play a fundamental role in defending and promoting rights, contributing significantly to the construction and consolidation of democracy. Historically, these movements have been essential in resisting authoritarian regimes and promoting democratization in Brazil. Now they face new challenges due to the advance of the far right and the growing violence against minorities and human rights defenders.

Developed from a literature review, interviews, and focus groups, the study explores the role of Brazilian philanthropy in funding and supporting social movements. The research also examines the self-financing strategies of these movements, the challenges they face, and the impact of philanthropic support on their work. It analyzes the differences in philanthropic approaches and highlights the need for greater involvement of private social investment in Barzil to strengthen social movements and promote significant social and political changes.
