Mama Cash is looking for a full time Senior Programme Officer – Body, for 36 hours a week.
Mama Cash aims to strengthen its grantmaking by hiring an ambitious and experienced feminist activist to manage a thematic grantmaking portfolio titled Body. The portfolio supports women’s, girls’ and trans people’s groups, organisations and initiatives that push beyond the status quo in the areas of reproductive justice, sexual rights, and ending violence all forms of violence.
The new SPO – Body will build our networks in this thematic area, act as a thought leader for the thematic area, shape Mama Cash’s portfolio of grantee-partners on the Body theme, and take leadership in developing our priorities related to the portfolio. The Senior Programme Officer will work both independently and as an integral member of the Programmes Team. The position will also support the Programmes Team to ensure that our grantmaking policies and procedures align with our strategic plan.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in a broad range of issues related to bodily integrity (reproductive justice, sexual rights, ending all forms of violence), have a human rights approach to working with women, girls and trans people, be an excellent communicator, and have knowledge of and fieldwork experience in working with social movements in the global south and east.
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Programme Officer – Body (SPO), carries out the grantmaking policy for a thematic portfolio of grants within the areas of reproductive justice, sexual rights, and ending violence. The SPO oversees all aspects of grantmanagement and administration for the portfolio. The SPO may supervise multiple members of the team. Demonstrated bilingual fluency in oral and written English and at least one other language relevant to Mama Cash’s work is required.
In addition, as a senior member of the Programme Team, the SPO works with the Director of Programmes to develop broader programmatic policies; leads special projects; plays a coaching role for Programme Officers; assists the Director of Programmes in the implementation of Mama Cash’s grantmaking processes and procedures; supports the delivery of Mama Cash’s philanthropy and communications objectives; represents the Programme Team externally; and occasionally deputizes for the Director of Programmes.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
A. Grantmaking and Programmes
● Identify and analyze thematic developments and trends in women’s rights especially as they relate to the portfolio theme on an ongoing basis.
● Maintain an expert understanding of how social change on issues within the thematic portfolio happen, as well as how the types of groups Mama Cash supports operate.
● Set grantmaking priorities and strategies for the thematic portfolio.
● Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate annual plans for the thematic portfolio.
● Help set overall programme budgets and manage the budget allocation for the portfolio.
● Administer and oversee all grantmaking tasks for the portfolio, including handling requests for funds, making decisions about which groups to support, how and why, developing grant files and budgets, and conducting analysis, monitoring and evaluation of grants and grantmaking activities.
● Build, manage and work with the network of formal and informal advisors for the portfolio.
● Prepare written progress reports and recommendations to the Board of Directors quarterly.
● Contribute to the development of improved learning, monitoring and evaluation procedures.
● Lead thematic grantmaking projects or those to strengthen team policies and practices.
B. Outreach and Communications
● Act as a thought leader for the thematic portfolio’s issue areas by articulating analysis of trends and grantmaking priorities to outside audiences, including media, donors and various institutions through a variety of methods (conferences, social media, etc.).
● Outreach to current and prospective grantee-partners to understand the social movements related to the thematic portfolio, their objectives, and to identify potential new grantee-partners.
● Build and maintain relationships with individual and institutional donors as necessary.
● Represent Mama Cash externally.
● Assist the Communications and Development teams in preparing communications materials, reports and proposals.
● Coordinate linking opportunities between grantee-partners and other actors, including other grantee-partners and other donors.
● Promote knowledge of issues within the thematic portfolio within Mama Cash through social media, information sessions and grantee-partner presentations.
C. Management and Supervision
● Provide support to the Director of Programmes through advising about staff, volunteers and procedural issues, and deputise where needed.
● Supervise members within the Programme team as needed.
● Support the Director of Programmes in programme budgeting and budget monitoring processes.
● Manage some fiscal responsibilities.
● Coach and provide guidance to Programme Officers and other team members.
● Supervise external consultants as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
● Strong interest in the fields of women’s human rights, philanthropy and a commitment to the mission and vision of Mama Cash.
● In-depth knowledge of women’s human rights and the work of women’s rights movements.
● In-depth knowledge of the economic, political, social and cultural trends that impact the thematic area, including how social movements can and are influencing these trends.
● Good understanding of philanthropy and grantmaking.
● Strong programme management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage complex tasks, plan and monitor, and work well across different team functions.
● Demonstrated bilingual fluency in oral and written English and at least one other language relevant to Mama Cash’s work.
● Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to perform analytical and researched work.
● Well-developed leadership and people skills, with a demonstrated ability to support and encourage team members.
● Demonstrated ability to take initiative and show creativity in solving problems.
● Ability to prioritise competing demands, meet deadlines and motivate others to do the same.
● A self-starter with excellent attention to detail.
● Ability to interact with staff at all levels of the organisation.
● Sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and different communication styles in a politically and culturally diverse environment.
● Strong skills in PC environment, and in using MS Office; familiarity with database programmes.
● Numerical proficiency and comfort with managing a large budget.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
● Minimum 5 years of substantive professional experience in international women’s rights issues.
● A Master’s degree in the social sciences or related field is strongly preferred (such as gender studies, anthropology, sociology or international development).
● Experience in the global south and east preferred.
● Experience managing budgets preferred.
● Substantive knowledge of and familiarity with grantmaking processes and procedures preferred.
● Substantive knowledge of and familiarity with the movement actors, networks and NGOs relevant to the thematic area.
● Supervisory experience.
Position
It is a one year full time position for 36 hours a week, with the possibility to extend. Salary: € 52,000 – € 60,000 gross per year.
