Alliance magazine is the leading global magazine for philanthropy and social investment, bringing our readers the latest debates and discussions from the sector. The December issue of Alliance focuses on social justice philanthropy; the guest editor is Christopher Harris, formerly with the Ford Foundation. This special feature, while acknowledging that achieving lasting change in society is no easy task, will try to establish a set of necessary conditions for what philanthropy for social justice means. It will look at social justice philanthropy in terms of three stages:
- Analysis of the unjust situation – focusing on the Brazil Human Rights Fund, the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Fund and the Arab Human Rights Fund
- Design of the grantmaking strategy – Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues and Dalit Foundation
- Evaluation of that strategy – with contributions by Barry Knight and Ana Criquillon
Albert Ruesga and Amelia Fauzia will address the definitional issues. Finally, two short articles will look at the experiences of the New Israel Fund and Community Foundation Northern Ireland of defending their institutions and their grantees from attack.
We would like this Alliance special feature to reach as many people as possible. We would therefore like to make some of our free content available to you. If you are interested in receiving relevant articles from the December issue of Alliance, please email Kai Hopkins on kai@alliancemagazine.org. He will also be able to answer your questions on Alliance magazine, or on this particular feature.
