Foundation for Peace Network Conference in New Delhi

The Role of Philanthropy in Peace Building & Structural Injustice Work in South Asia

In keeping with the Foundation for Peace Network’s commitment to furthering peace building efforts through the work of indigenous Foundations in societies driven by structural violence and injustice and to the sharing of learning and expertise with others, we are planning a conference event in New Delhi, India on Friday, 26th February 2010.

Conference Focus
The conference will focus on structural injustice and the many peace building efforts undertaken at the different levels of the chain of interventions to build peace.

The focus will be primarily on structural injustice in South Asia (Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka). South Asia is a region where violence, injustice and conflict have become entrenched in societal, political and economic structures. Caste is an overarching issue plaguing the region, entwined with divisions caused by ethnicity, religion and economic disparities. A large population in the region suffers unmitigated repression, anger, pain, violence and injustice. The conference will focus on peace building efforts by activists at grassroots level and the role of indigenous philanthropic contributions in affecting a sustainable impact on social justice and peacebuilding work.

It has been our experience that while violence manifests diversely, the strategies adopted to build peace often tread a similar path. Insights about the work of indigenous funders in fostering an environment of sustainable peace in societies such as Columbia, Northern Ireland, Georgia and Serbia, all of which are regions divided and wrought with armed conflicts, will also be shared and will help to broaden our perspective.

Who Should Attend?
The event will be of key interest to international philanthropic donors, intermediary indigenous donors, local foundations, policy makers, government departments, corporate bodies (with a social responsibility agenda) and grassroots practitioners.
